Small Business - Why is Cybersecurity so Important?

Jun 05, 2022

It Is No Longer Acceptable to Not Be Cybersecurity Proactive

Technology is booming, and so is the amount of users who use it on a daily basis. Not all users have innocent intentions when they log online, either. This means that hundreds of millions of people are online every day. Of these millions of people, there is bound to be a handful of bad seeds. These bad seeds like to partake in cyber attacks, which lead to data breaches, viruses, and chaos on the internet.

This is an ever-present reminder that cybersecurity is of the utmost importance. In order to prevent these attacks, we must ensure that cybersecurity is being dealt with proactively and efficiently. Cyberattack tactics are constantly being changed. This means these defenses need to be evaluated and adjusted accordingly. Keep reading to learn some key tips to keep yourself and your business safe from cyber attacks.

Use a Strong Password

Using a strong password that adheres to the password rules for a company or website is the first step to successfully protecting yourself from cyber attacks. Weak or easy to guess passwords are not great at keeping hackers out of your personal information. This is because they have the tools and programs they need to break down these passwords and use them against you.

Additionally, if you use a password for something you adore or that has your name in it, those closest to you may be able to guess it as well. Try to be as random and obscure as possible while adhering to the password guidelines.

Update Firmware

Firmware, also known as software, is an important part of your computer system. It tells the brains of the computer how to react under different scenarios. It also ensures to block out bugs, viruses, and malware from entering the system. Firmware is often provided by the company that manufactures the hardware that it is paired to. Additionally, software companies that create programs will also send firmware updates.

Do not ignore these updates. Promptly install them so that they can provide the added protection to your systems that you need. This is another great barrier against cyber criminals looking to find the smallest weakness in your system to steal your personal information.

Use a VPN

A VPN, also known as a virtual private network, is a tool that can be used to hide your IP address when you are browsing or working online. This is a great tool because it makes it harder for cyber criminals to target your computer and steal your information. This is because it encrypts your IP address and makes it appear as if it is somewhere entirely different than it really is. VPNs come in both paid and free versions. They are a great tool for personal and business use.

Backup Your Work

For those of you who have forgotten to save a document before closing out, you know the importance of saving your work or backing it up onto another device really well. This is because if an accident occurs or a cyber attack happens, these criminals can steal your files and leave you with nothing.

If you are proactive and regularly back up your files, you will always have a semi- up to date option to work from. This means you will not be left totally in the dark or stranded. It also means that your business will not freeze in its tracks or stall for too long.

Secure Yourself and Your Business

Your business relies on your proactive cybersecurity measures. Without them, you could be at risk of losing confidential client information, business plans, and important contracts. This can be detrimental to a business and, in worst-case scenarios, lead to your business’s bankruptcy. To prevent this, quickly invest in high-quality cybersecurity to ensure you are safe and secure.
