"Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of search engine optimization, paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion"

 

In simple terms it is promoting your website or business through placement of a custom advertisement on Google's or other search engines' pages. The position of your ad is determined by the amount you are willing to pay (your bid) for each click on your ad. The scheduling and frequency of your ad's display is determined by the key words or phrases you chose to include in your campaign and the total budget you set for your campaign.
